Build a convenient daily routine
Home charging can fit around overnight parking. Before installation, check your parking access, sanctioned electrical load, vehicle requirements, and any housing society permissions.
Read the home charging guidePractical information for electric vehicle owners in India. Learn how charging works, what affects the cost, and what to check before plugging in at home or on the road.
Estimate your charging costCharging an electric vehicle involves more than choosing a nearby station. Your vehicle’s charging capability, the connector, the available power, and the operator’s pricing all affect the experience. Start with these three essentials.

Read the home charging guideA listed charger may be occupied, unavailable, or incompatible. Check the operator’s app, access hours, connector type, and a backup location before travelling.
Read the public charging guideKilowatts describe charging power. Kilowatt-hours describe energy. Understanding the difference helps you compare chargers and make sense of your charging bill.
Understand AC and DC chargingAn EV battery stores energy as direct current, or DC. During AC charging, the vehicle’s onboard charger converts alternating current into DC. A DC charging station performs the conversion outside the vehicle and supplies DC to the battery.
The number on a charger is not a promise of the power your vehicle will receive. Charging is limited by the vehicle, the station, battery conditions, and sometimes shared site capacity. A car connected to a higher-rated charger will still follow its own charging limits.
| Factor | AC charging | DC charging |
|---|---|---|
| Common setting | Homes, workplaces, destination parking | Public charging hubs and highway stops |
| Power conversion | Inside the vehicle | Inside the charging equipment |
| Typical purpose | Charging during longer parking periods | Adding energy during shorter stops, where supported |
| What to check | Vehicle AC limit, supply capacity, connector | Vehicle DC support, connector, charging curve, price |
Estimate the battery energy required and its cost at a rate you enter. The defaults are examples, not current electricity or public charging tariffs.
Formula: usable battery capacity × percentage points ÷ 100 × price per kWh. For example, moving from 20% to 80% adds 60 percentage points. This simplified estimate excludes charging losses, taxes, parking, session charges, and idle fees. Billed energy can exceed the energy stored in the battery.
Start with the vehicle manufacturer’s charging instructions. A charger should suit your vehicle, parking arrangement, available electrical supply, and daily driving needs. Buying the highest-power unit does not automatically produce faster charging.
Avoid improvised connections and damaged charging equipment. Follow the equipment manufacturer’s instructions and arrange professional inspection if a plug, socket, or cable shows damage or unusual heating.
Choose charging stops around your vehicle’s realistic range rather than its best-case advertised range. Speed, weather, elevation, air-conditioning, and vehicle load can change energy consumption. Keep enough reserve to reach an alternative station.
Charging power often reduces as the battery approaches a high state of charge. On longer journeys, the most practical stopping strategy depends on your vehicle’s charging curve and the next available station.
No. Check connector compatibility, the vehicle’s supported charging method, and the station operator’s access requirements. Cars, scooters, and three-wheelers may use different charging arrangements.
It depends on the energy needed and the average charging power achieved. Dividing energy in kWh by power in kW gives a simplified time estimate in hours. Actual time also depends on losses, battery temperature, charging limits, and power tapering.
Compare your actual electricity tariff with the public operator’s complete pricing. Public charging may include additional fees, while a home installation has upfront costs. There is no single price that applies across India.
Follow your vehicle manufacturer’s guidance. Recommended daily charge limits vary with battery chemistry and vehicle design. Use the owner’s manual rather than a universal charging rule.
